Why is Pharmacogenomics (PGx) Important?
Prescription medications work differently for each person. This may be due to age, body size, health conditions, other medications, diet or lifestyle. Your genetic makeup also plays a role in how your body responds to medications because certain genes help break down and process them. You may have a change in one of these genes that makes your body break down a medication too quickly, too slowly, or not at all.
To unlock this information, a saliva sample is sent to a laboratory for DNA analysis to determine if you have any of the gene changes known to affect medications. Armed with information regarding these changes, your doctor will be better informed about the right medication or right dose that will work best for you.
of people have gene changes that impact how their body reacts to medicine1
of people are prescribed at least one medication impacted by gene changes2
of negative effects, allergic reactions, or overdoses could be prevented by PGx testing3
